American Sniper was the highest-grossing film of 2014. The Clint Eastwood-directed film brought Americans together through the story of an American hero in the war on terror. Chris Kyle was the most lethal sniper in American history. He fought for his country and brought down many members of Islamic terrorist groups in his time overseas.
It seems that patriotic Americans weren’t the only ones to take notice of the film. After it’s success, Muslims began protesting the film’s underlying messages against Islam. Some were offended to the point of outspokenness, calling for Eastwood to apologize for his film and its homage to a man that had killed so many of their own.
One Muslim group, the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, stated that the reaction of many moviegoers was putting them in “danger” due to its “bigotry,” and asked both Eastwood and star Bradley Cooper to speak out against any anti-Muslim interpretation viewers may have had.
The group wrote an open letter to both celebrities, stating, “ADC takes these threats seriously and is reaching out to you in an effort to help reduce the hateful rhetoric. It is our opinion that you could play a significant role in assisting us in alleviating the danger we are facing. I am asking if you are willing to make a statement against the violent rhetoric being exhibited,” the letter continued. “The statement should make it clear that we cannot tolerate hate and bigotry here in America.”
Eastwood responded with what was probably the most fitting answer: none at all. He refused to answer the open letter, and has not spoken out against any views his film created around the Muslim community. After all, the First Amendment guarantees us all the right to express our views, not just those views that don’t offend others.
